Ah, simply peachy swinggrass music that's a sound for sore ears! Too Blue is a contemporary quartet, based in New York and Connecticut, that includes Joan Harrison (banjo, vocals), Betsy Rome (guitar, vocals), Jack Murphy (bass), and Michael Sassano (mandolin). Along with guest fiddler Joyce Andersen, the group picks up a breeze. They just seem to be so comfortable and a perfect musical fit with each other.

Joan Harrison, a former student of Tony Trischka, won second place in the 2000 banjo contest at Roxbury, Conn. Guitarist Betsy Rome has been featured in Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, and she's a past member of Sassygrass, the northeast champions of the 1992 Pizza Hut Showdown. Bassist Jack Murphy also plays with "Burnt Potatoes." Finally, Michael Sassano picks a lively swing mandolin, is a founding member of "Out To Lunch," and is currently co-writing a book of mandolin tablature with Barry Mitterhoff and Wayne Fugate.

While their promotional material indicates that they also cover popular bluegrass and country songs, "A Little on the Blue Side" is a project of strong, intelligent all-original material from Harrison and Rome. Both women handle all of the vocals, and the two "blue"birds have a nice sisterlike blend that is easy on the ears. Acoustic swing typically includes a few novelty numbers, and the ladies don't let us down with numbers like "Full Time Job," "Too Good to be Bad," and "Two Dogs." The album's title cut is a nicely-arranged piece that packs a punch. A nice country feel is the setting for "When the Bloom is Off the Rose," while bluegrass fans will especially enjoy more uptempo numbers like "Morning Dew." Equally impressive is all of the band members' proficiency on their respective instruments. Two melodic instrumentals ("Three Rivers" and "Emma's Dilemma") are played. Those, as well as the fills and breaks on the other songs, demonstrate a competent and skilled journeyperson approach. Too Blue simply produces enjoyable acoustic string music of fine workmanship.

At the conclusion of this successful album of smart songs, I was left saying, "Ain't that somethin'!" But, as only a minor question, I was also left wondering if some of the arrangements could have also included a third vocal harmony, and if either of the guys on the project could have sung a number for a slight change-up in the set. Certainly more towards the swing spectrum than bluegrass, Too Blue's music is very earsome. I know I'd really enjoy catching this entertaining band live, along with guest fiddler Andersen, at a café in the heart of New England. Their happy music is certainly a delight, and it is certainly a refreshing and relaxing mood-enhancing way to escape the stresses of life. With their light-hearted and high-spirited approach to string music, maybe the band should've called themselves "Too Happy." (Joe Ross)
