Hooked on Bluegrass

Rick Jamison

My earliest exposure to bluegrass music was incidental to watching the Beverly Hillbillies and Bonnie and Clyde as a kid. It wasn't until 1973 -- my freshman year in college -- when a friend turned me on to a Doc Watson record, that I was truly hooked.

I had begun to play the guitar ten years earlier, but I had never before heard the instrument flatpicked like that. Once I felt those first goose bumps brought on by hearing Doc go to town on tunes like Salt Creek and Black Mountain Rag, there was no turning back for me.
