Hooked on Bluegrass

LeRoy "Mack" McNees

I grew up in a home where my mom and dad played country music, i.e. Jimmy Rogers, Maddox Brothers and Rose, T. Texas Tyler, Sons of the pioneers etc. However I never had heard real bluegrass until a friend of mine that I played some music with (Johnny Cash type) said "come over to the house I have a new record I want to play for you." I was eighteen years old at the time. He played a Flatt and Scruggs album the song was Randy Lynn Rag. It changed the course of my life and I was hooked big time.

I wanted to duplicate that sound but didn’t have a clue how they did it. One day I heard that sound again on the radio, it was a live show so I went down to the hall where they were broadcasting from and introduced myself to the band. The band just happened to be “The Country Boys” later to be "The Kentucky Colonels." I was able to hang out with these guys and eventually got a Dobro and learned how to play it and joined the band. And as they say “the rest is history.
