Hooked on Bluegrass
I was familiar with the ukelele, guitar and tenor banjo as a youngster, when the Kingston Trio’s Dave Guard led me to the 5-string banjo (not personally). Hootenanny was the thing and Pete Seeger was popular. Then a couple of years later the Dillards “Back Porch Bluegrass” album showed me there was another way to play the 5-string. While at school in Colorado in 1963, I had the opportunity to meet Doug Dillard backstage at a club called the Exodus. Doug showed me how to “drop thumb” (or “double thumb”) the second string up the neck and I was HOOKED.
