Hooked on Bluegrass

Bradley Walker

I have a dear friend of mine, Ray Edwards, who I’ve played music with for a long time. He can play just about anything that’s got a string on it. We played country music in a band for several years.

We would play these places on Saturday night, and when we finished he’d say “Come on out to the truck, I’ve got something I want you to listen to.” The first thing he played for me was JD Crowe and the New South. A 1975 record with Old Home Place, and Ricky playing Sally Gooden. That’s the first thing I heard. The next week he did the same thing and played a Lou Reed and Carolina album for me. After listening to the harmonies and the music of guys like Tony Rice, Lou Reed, Ricky, and others, I was hooked from the start.

I started digging in a little deeper and found out about The Lonesome River Band, IIIrd Time Out, the Stanley Brothers, and all the different bands out there. My life has not been the same since.
