Hooked on Bluegrass

Mark Newton

I was born in Paducah, KY. in 1957 where my mother's family was from. In 1960 we moved to Fredericksburg, VA. It was eleven children in my father's family. 7 boys and 4 girls and all of them including my grandfather played music. My Mother played the piano. As far back as can remember music was a part of our household. All of my Uncles and Aunts played musical instruments. Fiddles, banjo's, guitars, mandolin's and so forth. My dad "Frog Newton" played rhythm guitar and sing lead. They where country folks and farmed and worked for living but they love Country and Bluegrass Music. I grew up in the 60's listening to music and as a child my Dad used to take me to Festivals such as Culpeper American Legion Park in Culpeper, VA, Watermelon Park Barryville, Va. and Lake Whippoorwill in Warrenton, VA. not to mention all the concerts around the area. In that part of the State you could go somewhere every weekend and see Bill Monroe, Stanley Brother's, Flatt & Scruggs, Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys and the list goes on forever.

I was born into the music and as I reflect back on my childhood I realize how special it was to be able to experience our first generation artists and there's know question it shaped my musical direction and that is how I got hooked on Bluegrass.
