Hooked on Bluegrass

David Thom

I was playing original rock in one band, and original folk in another while living in Missoula, MT in the early part of the 90's. It was then that I was introduced to Richie Reinholdt the local guitar god. Turns out Richie's passion is bluegrass and after catching his weekly performance to a limited crowd on a Tuesday night in a smoky bar, I was sold on the concept. I found a higher calling than dollars, beer or women: skill and talent (which, incidentally, can lead to the aforementioned).

Then I met a 19 year old Slovene banjo player who I jammed with for 3 months while on tour in eastern Europe the winter of '95/'96. This kid could kill it, and I had a hard time keeping up. That's when studying bluegrass melodies became a passion.

Finally I became an employee and then friend of David Grisman's in '96 and his influence has been immeasurable. Dawg showed me the way to the right attitude for bluegrass and I'm proud to say I'm in a band with him today.
