Hooked on Bluegrass

Jim Roe

From 1994 to 2002 I worked for country music label MCA Nashville and worked out of the Universal Distribution offices in Atlanta. It was common to trade your labels CD's with friends at other labels for their CD's. You never, well hardly ever received a bluegrass CD, but I did (I still listen to every CD someone sends me), and I put it on thinking I wasn't going to like it knowing it was bluegrass. The CD was Del McCoury Band's "Del And The Boys". I was hooked on this CD that very first listen, how do you beat 1952 Vincent Black Lighting, what a first song to get hooked on. I was playing it for everyone. Of course no one could believe I liked it, but like myself, I did convert some people into becoming Del McCoury fans. The next CD I picked up was Del McCoury Band's "It's Just The Night", LOVED IT TOO, that was in 2003.

In July of 2004 Skaggs Family Records ask me to do some consulting for them, and in doing so after listening to Ricky Skaggs, Melonnie Cannon, Mountain Heart and a few others I WAS HOOKED big time. A very good friend, over time started feeding me the early stuff, I wanted to listen to the early stuff right away but he kept telling me it was too early for me to listen to it. He weened me on it.

To say the least I seriously am hooked and can listen to bluegrass anytime anywhere and wish I would have started listening to it a long time ago. That's my story and I am sticking to it!
