Hooked on Bluegrass

Allen Light

I got hooked on Bluegrass with the help of one of my best friends, Larry Kuhn. I showed up at the Fifth String on "H" street some seven years ago. I came with music books, footstool and a Taylor 710 in hand and started to play Jimmy Rogers finger-style. That is when my illustrious pal Larry, better known in some circles as Uncle Larry, turned me on to the likes of Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt and the Stanley Brothers.

I will never forget the first piece in a series of songs that Larry requested me to learn: it was "Ramshackle Shack"; then it was "Old Pal". That is the reason I continued to use my music books everywhere I went. Larry kept giving me songs to learn and I had to carry all my books around at all jams and camp-outs. Seriously, he then turned me on to Larry Sparks and the rest is history. I was bitten and have had this bluegrass bite mark every since.
