Hooked on Bluegrass

Rick Lampkins

[Note: This story was written by Jami Lampkins on behalf of the entire Lampkins family.]

We (Rick, Terrie, and Jami) moved out to Las Vegas from Salina, Kansas in about 1988. Mom (Terrie) and Dad (Rick) had been in country bands most of their lives so it was only natural for Dad to start looking for musical clubs, associations, or bands to join.

Through his many adventures (including lead guitarist of an Elvis impersonators band), he was able to get in contact with the Southern Nevada Bluegrass Music Society and joined on the spot. Mom and I followed him to festivals and it didn't take long, and we were hooked as well.

Dad formed his first bluegrass band, The Red Rock Mountain Boys, and not long after that, added a Plus One when I joined as the bass and mandolin player. From there we started the Lampkins Family Band that has been proud to call Doug Sherwood, Dony Thomas, and Leon Evens as family members. Our latest version of the family band includes Heather Grady on vocals and bass. We have had some recent success winning The Bluegrass Playoffs at Huck Finn 2003 and have really been enjoying our time together!
