Icing on the Possum -- Treat yourself to a marvelous montage here of Mike Melnyk photos and sounds from the contra dance during music camp at the Father’s Day Festival. A group of hot players got together and called themselves Icing on the Possum and Mike was there clicking away.

Ali and Bobby in the neighborhood -- The new, up and coming dynamic duo of Alison Krauss & Robert Plant have three gigs nearby this weekend. On the 27th they will appear at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, on the 28th at Harvey’s Casino in Lake Tahoe, and on the 30th at Humphrey’s in San Diego. These two may go somewhere if they keep at it…

High, green and bluegrass in Sonoma -- This weekend at Murphy’s Irish Pub in the town of Sonoma there will be three nights in a row of bluegrass to be enjoyed. On the 27th High Country will play starting at 8 p.m., and on the 28th it will be Savannah Blu starting at 8 p.m. Then on Sunday the 29th see John Kelly & Greengrass starting at 6 p.m. Tasty food is available in a family-friendly atmosphere, and there is no cover.

Jammin’ in Sonora -- On the second and fourth Friday there is a jam at the Old Stan in Sonora, so head on over on the 27th at 7 p.m. This jam has no ending time so people are welcome to pick until they drop.

High Hills in Altadena -- The all-female quartet known as High Hills can be seen/heard playing on the 28th at The Coffee Gallery Backstage starting at 7 p.m.

Jammin’ in Chico -- The bluegrass jam in downtown Chico takes place on the fourth Saturday at Augie's Coffee House at 230 Salem Street, between 2nd & 3rd Streets, on the 28th from 2-5:30 p.m., with the first hour being a slow jam.

Sparrows flying into SoCal -- The Sparrow Quartet, featuring Abigail Washburn (of Uncle Earl), Bela Fleck (banjo), Casey Driessen (fiddler), and Ben Sollee (cellist), can be seen playing at The Troubadour in Hollywood on the 28th, at the Soho Restaurant & Music Club in Santa Barbara on the 29th starting at 8 p.m., and at the Belly Up Tavern in Solano Beach on the 30th.

Jammin’ in Squaw Valley -- The last-Saturday-of-the-month bluegrass jam and potluck in Squaw Valley (near Fresno) will take place at the Bear Mountain Library on Hwy. 180 in Squaw Valley on the 28th from 5-9 p.m. Bring your instrument and a dish to share. Celebrating brothers -- The Waller Brothers (Butch and Bob) will be having a CD release party on the 28th at McGrath’s Pub in Alameda. The disc is titled The Old Photograph, and on hand will be High Country and other special guests.

Jammin’ in Sebastopol -- The place for bluegrass pickin' on Saturdays is the Coffee Catz, 6761 Sebastopol Ave, from 2-5 p.m.

Turn your radio on -- Tune into Peter Thompson’s Bluegrass Signal radio show on KALW (91.7 FM) in SF on the 28th from 6:30-8 p.m. to hear two new compilations, featuring music from the 1970s by Dave Evans and Larry Sparks, a brand-new recording from Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, and a new compilation of standards titled Best Loved Bluegrass, all from Rebel Records.

Paul and Friends -- Sound engineer and bass player extraordinaire Paul Knight & Friends will be pickin’ out at the Station House Cafe, located in downtown Pt. Reyes Station in West Marin, on the 29th from 5-8:30 p.m. His friends for this show will be David Thom, Bill Evans and John Fuller.

Who's that knocking at my door? -- It could very well be the Knuckle Knockers, who will be playing at 3 p.m. on the 29th at Red Hill Books in the Bernal Heights area of SF, located at Cortland & Bennington Streets. Martha Hawthorne, Bill Foss and Karen Celia will perform old-time tunes on guitar, fiddle, banjo and mandolin. Free music, free refreshments, and even some free books.

Jumpin’ Jupiter -- 49 Special will be performing in Berkeley at the Jupiter pub on the 29th from 5-8 p.m. The pub is a great outdoor/indoor venue with excellent food and house brews, located right across from the downtown Berkeley BART station.

Fiddlin’ kids teachers -- The Fiddlekids Faculty Concert will be happening at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley on the 29th at 8 p.m. It will be a night of fiery fiddling with faculty from the FiddleKids summer camp program, featuring Bobbi Shearn Nikles, Laura Risk, Julian Smedley, Julie Egger, and Evie Ladin.

Kate Wolf reminder -- The Kate Wolf Memorial Festival in Laytonville runs from the 27th through the 29th. Some of the acts you can see there are The Waifs, John Gorka & Lucy Kaplansky w/Nina Gerber, The Wailin' Jennys, Rosalie Sorrels, The Greencards and lots more.
