Giant jam session in Turlock. Most everyone is gathering in Turlock this weekend for the CBA Spring Campout at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds. It promises to be a great time. If you cannot make, there are a lot of other activities going on all over the place, so whatever you do, get out of the house and enjoy some great music!

Weekend with Rita -- You have two chances to see Rita Hosking & Cousin Jack play this weekend. On the 11th it will be a show at Dave’s Cave in Auburn starting at 8 p.m., and on Sunday the 13th from 1-1:45 p.m. it will be the Emerson Carnival at the Emerson Junior High School in Davis.

Jammin’ in Sonora -- Tonight as usual on the second Friday there is a jam at the Old Stan in Sonora, so head on over at 7 p.m. This jam has no ending time so people are welcome to pick until they drop.

Bluegrass in Sonoma -- At Murphy’s Irish Pub in the town of Sonoma on the 11th enjoy the bluegrass sounds of the Marin County band Savannah Blu starting at 8 p.m., and then on the 12th it will be The Whutknotts blending bluegrass, country and Celtic tunes. Tasty food is available in a family-friendly atmosphere, and there is no cover.

Kitchen pickin’ -- The Kitchen Help Bluegrass Band will be servin’ up some old fashioned bluegrass on the 11th from 6:30-9 p.m. at Bob’s Courthouse Café, 2198 Broadway Street, in Redwood City.

Jammin’ in Sebastopol -- The place for pickin' on Saturdays is the Coffee Catz, from 2-5 p.m., and on the 12th it will an afternoon of bluegrass, old-time, old country, acoustic picking and fiddling.

Turn your radio on! -- Tune into Peter Thompson’s Bluegrass Signal radio show on KALW (91.7 FM) in SF on the 12th from 5- 8 p.m. for a special three hour edition of the show during the station’s pledge drive. The theme is Hard Pressed (But We Can Find A Way): The Bi-Annual Membership Drive Special, with great music and thank-you gifts, including brand-new releases by Longview (with James King, Don Rigsby, J.D. Crowe, and Ron Stewart), The Punch Brothers (featuring Chris Thile), plus Flatt & Scruggs TV Shows and tickets to the CBA’s Father’s Day Festival – as well as the opportunity to show your support for bluegrass on KALW. High desert grass -- The Nathan McEuen Trio and Scott Gates & Pacific Ocean Bluegrass will be playing on the 12th at 7:30 p.m. at the High Desert For The Arts in Victorville. Scott will also be playing as part of Nathan’s trio on this gig and he will be touring with them this summer.

More Tonic -- The Bluegrass Tonic Series in SF continues this weekend when The Burning Embers rip it up on the 12th at The Riptide, located at 3639 Taraval Street, starting at 9 p.m.

Bluegrass in Santa Rosa -- Once you get your taxes done this weekend go and celebrate at the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa on the 13th from 7-10 p.m. with Sheila Groves & Flatt Lonesome. No cover.

Mandolin fest in SF -- The annual Festival of the Mandolins will be happening on the 13th at the Croatian American Cultural Center in SF. Events start at 10:30 a.m. It will be an historic gathering of mandolin orchestras, as for the first time ever all five of the Bay Area mandolin orchestras will be performing on the same program. There will also be a guest appearance by mandolinist Tom Rozum, backed up by Home Run Jethro (Laurie Lewis, Tony Marcus & Paul Shelasky).

Jammin' in the Southland -- On the 13th the monthly second Sunday jam at Tucker's Grove County Park in Santa Barbara will be starting at noon and going until whenever. For more info, e-mail Alan Aleksander at Also on the 13th there will a bluegrass jam at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena from 12:30-3:30 p.m. This free bluegrass jam is held on the second Sunday of every month in the Gallery, which is connected to the coffee house and seats 49, so there is plenty of room for players as well as spectators. Players tend to be intermediate to advanced. This is an acoustic event without amplifiers or microphones. The coffee house offers a wide selection of drinks and pastries.

Dancing with squirrels -- Swing your partner this Sunday at the square dance at The Make Out Room in SF from 8-10 p.m. Music will be provided by the Squirrelly Stringband with callers Jordan Ruyle and Amy Hofer. No experience necessary!
