Happy ending -- Happy New Year to everyone! There are strung-out streamers, confetti, and empty Champagne bottles strewn about the Almost Daily News office here in downtown San Francisco. Not just because we are celebrating the end of 2010, but also, as it turns out – at least for the time being – because I am celebrating the end of my time here as the writer of this column. What began as an experiment on a tentative basis on November 10, 2007, has now run for three plus years, but due to circumstances beyond my control, this is my final column. In short, real life has gotten in the way, and I have less and less time to write anymore, mostly due to day job commitments. It is possible that I may just be going on a hiatus, sabbatical, or whatever you want to call it. But for now, after 466,154 words and 466 columns, this is the end. The hope here is that some of you got some pleasure out of reading the column from time to time during my tenure. Happy trails to you, until we meet again…

“And here's a hand, my trusty friend, and gie's a hand o' thine; we'll take a cup o' kindness yet, for auld lang syne.”

Life’s railway to heaven in 2010 -- The media is saturated right now with year-end best/worst lists, along with predictions for the New Year. Instead of jumping on that trite journalist band wagon, I am just going to mention a brief list of some noted musical folks who went on to Glory Land during this past year. Obviously, many of these were not bluegrass musicians. Apologies to those who may have been inadvertently overlooked: Bob James, Marty Godbey, Bobby Charles, Teddy Pendergrass, Carl Smith, Kate McGarrigle, Bud Cockrell, Alex Chilton, Taku Sakashta, Doug Fieger, John Ciambotti, Jim Marshall, Dave Fisher, Segovia Bader, Jeb Brady, Jimmy Dean, Hank Cochran, Chuck McCabe, Ben Keith, Bobby Hebb, Mitch Miller, Mitch Jayne, Richie Hayward, Kenny Edwards, Jimmy Baum, Solomon Burke, and Billy Taylor.

Some coming attractions in 2011 -- Rhonda Vincent & The Rage in Berkeley 1/5, Chico 1/6; The CBA Great 48 Bluegrass Jam in Bakersfield 1/6-9; The Kingston Trio in Livermore 1/7, in Modesto 1/8, in Antioch 1/9, and in Palm Desert on the 1/12; River City Bluegrass Festival in Portland, OR, 1/7-9; West Coast Ramblers at Thee Parkside in SF 1/9; Bluegrass in the Good Land Benefit with Byron Berline, Peter Feldmann and Phil Salazar in Goleta 1/15; Jody Stecher & Kate Brislin and Cliff Perry & Laurel Bliss at Redwood Bluegrass Associates in Mountain View 1/22; Bluegrass in the Park in Yuma, AZ 1/22; David Lindley at the Dance Palace in Point Reyes Station 1/22; Bluegrass On Broadway in Redwood City 1/27-30; Annual Cloverdale Old-Time Fiddle Contest and Festival 1/29-30; San Francisco Bluegrass & Old-Time Festival 2/11-19; Summertown Road and OMGG at Redwood Bluegrass Associates in Mountain View 2/12; Steve Spurgin at the Oak Song Society show at Bernie’s Guitars in Redding 2/18; CBA Winter Music Camp near Petaluma 2/24-27; Grasstowne in Orangevale 2/25, Morgan Hill 2/26; Bluegrass on the Beach in Lake Havasu, AZ 3/4-6; Brookdale Spring Bluegrass Festival in Boulder Creek 3/11-13; Robin & Linda Williams & Their Fine Group at Redwood Bluegrass Associates in Mountain View 3/12; Sonoma County Bluegrass & Folk Festival in Sebastopol 3/12; Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen at Redwood Bluegrass Associates in Mountain View 4/30; Kathy Kallick Band at the Oak Song Society show at Bernie’s Guitars in Redding 4/30; The CBA Father’s Day Festival 6/16/19.
