Home for the holidays -- For the first time in 25 years your Almost Daily News editor is back east outside of Philly where there are frigid temps and a recent accumulation of 6-8 inches snow, as family obligations (an ailing, aged mother) are in order this holiday season. As we all know, we have a lot to be thankful for, living in California, and the weather is right up there at the top of the list, with bluegrass running a close second. I am looking forward to a return west and a more reasonable climate by Friday to welcome in the New Year…

Life’s railway to heaven -- Bob James, one-half of the wonderful duo Hoof Hearted, passed away early this morning in Mountain View, Arkansas. Bob and his partner Ernie Hunt were mainstays at the CBA Father’s Day Festival, and they sang the songs of the Louvin Brothers like no one else. He will be missed.

Experienced pickers -- The David Grisman Bluegrass Experience is playing just one show in the Bay Area this holiday season at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley tonight, so you’d better see them while you can.

No Nellies in SF -- The Barefoot Nellies were supposed to be picking some bluegrass at Amnesia in SF on the 27th, but some of them are snowed in back east. There will be another band playing instead, so go on over to find out who it is. No cover.

Jam-less in Alameda -- In case you missed it last week, there will be no jammin’ this night and perhaps nevermore at McGrath’s Pub in Alameda. Read the sad story here.

Ramblers in Moss Landing -- Tonight is bluegrass night at Phil’s Fish Market with The Courthouse Ramblers playing from 6-8 p.m.

Burrito grass -- The Monday night Baja Taqueria Invitational Bluegrass jam takes place in Oakland at 8 p.m. featuring Red Rick, Bruce Campbell, Ran Bush, Gene Tortora, and Neil Linden. Have a burrito and enjoy the bluegrass.

Jammin’ in Signal Hill -- Every Monday night, from 6-9 p.m., there is a bluegrass jam at Curley’s Café in Signal Hill. The address is 1999 E Willow Street at Cherry Avenue. Everyone is welcome. For more info contact Jim Wieser at

South Bay bluegrass barbecue -- Windy Hill will be serving up bluegrass to go along with the spicy offerings at Sam’s Bar-B-Que in San Jose on the 28th from 6-9 p.m.

Bean Country in Moss Landing -- The Tuesday bluegrass night at Phil’s Fish Market will feature Billy, Pete and Sarah of Bean Creek joined by Jim Mintun of High Country on dobro playing from 6-8 p.m.

Jammin’ in Ventura -- The Ventura Bluegrass Jam at Zoey’s Café takes place on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 6-9:30 p.m.

Turn your radio on -- Tune into the Bluegrass Country show every Tuesday from 10 a.m.-noon on KMUD up in Garberville to hear Ken Jorgenson playing two hours of bluegrass and country music. Ken also is the owner of Blue Heron soft-shell instrument cases.

Coming attractions -- For folks that want to plan ahead, at the beginning of the week there are listings found here of upcoming festivals, fairs, campouts, special events and more. All you have to do is click on the links to find out information about each event. As the dates draw near there will be more information about the events posted above. If there is something not included on this list feel free to drop me a note to let me know.
