Fun/fundraising in Cupertino -- The annual KKUP Marathon is going on this weekend, and lots of acts are playing on the station to raise money to help keep all of the great bluegrass, folk and country music on the air. Some of the acts you can hear on Sunday the 10th are Highway One (1 p.m.), Sidesaddle & Co. (2 p.m.), Jim & Louise Mintun (4 p.m.) and Richard Brandenburg (9:15 p.m.). Cruising the Delta -- There is a gig available in late April for one or two Bay Area bluegrass bands, which is playing aboard the SS Jeremiah O’Brien while it cruises up and down the Delta from SF to Stockton. Full details can be found on the Message Board. Tell ‘em you read about it here.

Triple bill at the Atlas -- Three bands are playing today at the Atlas Café in SF, starting at 4 p.m. First up will be String Break, followed by the Squirrelly Stringband, with Faux Renwah closing out the show. No cover.

Jammin' in Sebastopol -- The place to be on Saturdays is the Coffee Catz, from 2-5 p.m. Today it will be bluegrass, old-time, old country, acoustic picking and fiddling.

Tune-up for Wintergrass -- Head on out to Martinez tonight to see the Alhambra Valley Band when they play from 8-11 p.m. at Armando's, located at 707 Marina Vista. They will also be one of the featured bands at Wintergrass in Tacoma, WA, on the 21st-24th.

Peter Rowan in SF -- You can see The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band (w/Jody Stecher, Keith Little, Paul Knight) playing tonight at the Noe Valley Ministry in SF. Also on the bill are Eric & Suzy Thompson. You can also Peter and band playing in Larkspur, Mountain View, Winters and Tuolumne in the next two weeks. Go to his web site for details.

Alt-bluegrass show -- At the Café du Nord tonight in SF, starting at 7:30 p.m., you can see the Pine Box Boys, The Earl Brothers, Kemo Sabe, and the screening of the film The New Grass.

Swing your partner -- There is a square dance tonight with The Freight Hoppers in SF at the Swedish American Hall (above the Café du Nord). Show starts at 9, with Bill Martin calling.

Cliff Wagner in San Pedro -- Cliff Wagner & Old #7 will be playing a show tonight at the Grand Vision Performance Space in San Pedro. A portion on the proceeds will go to the restoration and preservation of the historic Warner Grand Theater.

Turn your radio on -- On Garrison Keillor's radio show A Prairie Home Companion today at 6 p.m. on KQED (88.5 FM) in the SF Bay Area you can hear mandolin maestro Sam Bush and country singer Suzy Bogguss perform. The show will be replayed on Sunday the 10th at 11 a.m. Also, you can tune into Peter Thompson’s Bluegrass Signal radio show in SF tonight. Here is his description of the show: “‘Bluegrass on Broadway’ is a new festival taking place next weekend in Redwood City; hear previews of their film festival, with music by Vern Williams, Jake Quesenberry, Ola Belle Reed, and The Goins Brothers.” Go to KALW (91.7 FM) from 6:30-8 p.m. You can also listen to both of these shows online.

Jamming in the Southland -- On the 10th the monthly second Sunday jam at Tucker's Grove County Park in Santa Barbara will be starting at noon and going until whenever. For more info, e-mail Alan Aleksander at Also tomorrow there will a bluegrass jam at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena from 12:30-3:30 p.m. This free bluegrass jam is held on the second Sunday of every month in the Gallery, which is connected to the coffee house and seats 49, so there is plenty of room for players as well as spectators. Players tend to be intermediate to advanced. This is an acoustic event without amplifiers or microphones. The coffee house offers a wide selection of drinks and pastries.

Paul and Friends -- After playing with Peter Rowan on Saturday night, sound engineer and bass player extraordinaire Paul Knight & Friends will be pickin’ out at the Station House Cafe, located in downtown Pt. Reyes Station in West Marin, on the 10th from 5-8:30 p.m. His friends will for this show will be Cactus Bob & Flower as well as the banjo player who simply goes by the name of Banana.

Grammy Awards -- The 50th Annual Grammy Awards show will air on Sunday the 10th starting at 8 p.m., and there are a handful of bluegrass categories on the program. Instead of wasting three hours of your life watching the show, either check back here on Monday for winners or consult your local fishwrap.
