Last weekend in August -- Have we really reached the end of the summer already? Hard to believe that the month of August is in its final throes. This doesn’t mean that the music has stopped though. There is plenty of bluegrass and more going on these next few days, so get out and have some fun while the weather is warm and the living is easy…

Bluegrass romance -- Bluegrass notables Tim Stafford and Alecia Nugent, according to the Bluegrass Blog, have announced their engagement. No doubt an album or two is already in the works...

David Grier guitar -- Amazing guitarist David Grier is busy this weekend playing shows in Culver City on the 27th, San Diego on the 28th, and in Davis on the 29th.

Fest in Hemet -- The Hemet Elks Bluegrass Jamboree runs through the 29th, and some of the acts you can see there are Scott Gates & Nathan McEuen, The Brombies, The Bladerunners, and Lonesome Otis. Check out the site for exact dates and times.

Bluegrass in the park in Clovis -- Red Dog Ash will be playing the Bluegrass in the Park series on the 27th in the Clovis Veteran's Memorial Square from 6:30-8:30 p.m. This is a free event.

Scott Gates on the weekend -- Young mandolinist Scott Gates along with Nathan McEuen will be playing together on the 28th at the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Hills at 5 p.m. and then on the 29th at the Hemet Elks Festival at 1 and 3:30 p.m.

Snap to it! -- See Snap Jackson & The Knock On Wood Players playing at the Hotel Leger in Mokelumne Hill on the 27th and at the Queen Bean in Modesto on the 28th.

Bluegrass at Murphy’s in Sonoma -- At Murphy’s Irish Pub in the town of Sonoma on the 27th it will be traditional bluegrass performed by the Red Rock Ramblers and on the 28th more of the same with High Country from 8-10 p.m. No cover, and good food and beer in a family friendly atmosphere.

Bellegrass -- Belle Monroe & Her Brewglass Boys are headed down the coast from SF to play at the Crepe Place in Santa Cruz on the 27th, and then on the 28th it will be a house concert in Carmel Valley.

Quadruple bill in SF -- Shelby Ash Presents the Old-Time Southern Murder Hour with four bands at the Great American Music Hall in SF on the 27th.

Open house at the Freight -- On the 28th head on over to the free open house at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley that will include jams, performances and more.

Pickin’ time in Boulder Creek -- Lots of folks will be jamming at the 10th Annual Johnson Farm Bluegrass/Old-Time Picking Party in Boulder Creek on the 28th.

Turn your radio on -- Tune into Peter Thompson’s Bluegrass Signal radio show on KALW (91.7 FM) in SF on the 28th from 6:30-8 p.m. The show this week is titled Across the Tracks, featuring new releases and reissues. You can listen online on the KALW web site, and the first hour of the show is also broadcast five times each week on

Jammin’ in Sebastopol -- The place for bluegrass pickin' on Saturdays is the Coffee Catz, 6761 Sebastopol Ave, from 2-5 p.m.

Alive dudes -- The Grateful Dudes will be playing bluegrass on the 28th at Vincenzo’s Pizza in Newhall from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Band members Bill Bryson, Dennis Fetchet, Scott Micale and Rodger Phillips have been playing at Vincenzo’s for over 20 years now.

Jammin’ in Modesto -- There is a jam in Modesto taking place at Ingram and Braun’s Musik Shoppe on Saturdays from 3-5 p.m. at their location at 503 Bangs Avenue. Go on by to join the fun!

The Bluegrass Mix -- The site called The Bluegrass Mix streams bluegrass online 24/7. Sky Powers has a show called Pacifically Bluegrass, and it airs every Saturday evening from 4-8 p.m. out here in CA. He plays a fine mix of bluegrass, both old and new, with an emphasis on new releases and he also devotes a portion of his show to playing and promoting the bluegrass bands of the Pacific West and Rockies. Dusty Shoes in Grover Beach -- Every Saturday from 5-7 p.m. the Dusty Shoes Gospel Band plays bluegrass at the Station Grill, 170 W. Grand Avenue, in Grover Beach. This is a free event.

Jumpin’ Jupiter -- West Coast bluegrass at its best will be offered by High Country on the 29th at the Jupiter Pub in Berkeley from 5-8 p.m. No cover.

Bluegrass at the beach -- The Mill Valley-based band Savannah Blue on the 29th is headed over Mount Tamalpais to pick some bluegrass at the Sand Dollar in Stinson Beach from noon-3 p.m.
