Uncle Ralph -- This past Saturday evening, while playing some bluegrass with Dr. Elmo & Wild Blue at Murphy’s Irish Pub in the town of Sonoma, a piece of paper made it to the stage with a request for “Man of Constant Sorrow.” I used to sing the song years ago, but it had fallen off the set list. Still, I thought I could remember some of it, and I stumbled through a few verses, much to the delight of the crowd. Halfway through the song I noticed a person in the back holding her cell phone up in the air, and I was mystified as to why anyone would want to share my hatchet job with anyone else. At the break the woman with the phone waved me over to her table, and she said, “I want to thank you so much for singing that song. My husband’s uncle sang it in a movie about ten years ago, and I wanted my husband to hear the song being played live.” The wheels started turning in my slow-moving brain. I said, “Are you saying that Ralph Stanley is your husband’s uncle?” “Yes he is, and he was quite happy to hear his uncle’s song being sung live over the phone.” Considering the way I mangled the tune, I’m so glad it wasn’t Uncle Ralph who was listening in…
