Make a run for it -- The CBA wants/needs you! Elections to the board will take place this fall, and now is the time to throw your proverbial hat into the ring and to get involved. All you have to do is write a candidate’s statement, get 15 CBA members to sign your candidacy petition, and if elected, commit to attending board meetings eleven times a year. Don’t be a fence sitter and complainer on the Message Board. Do so now by simply going here and following the east steps.

Giant Dead fans -- Take me out to the ballgame! On August 9th it will be Jerry Garcia Day at Pacbell (or whatever corporate monolith the place is now named for) Park when the SF Giants play the Chicago Cubs on the 15th anniversary of the passing of the former guitarist for the Grateful Dead and banjo player for Old and In the Way. Bob Weir will sing the National Anthem and Mickey Hart will lead a kazoo ensemble on “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Some of the proceeds will be benefit the Rex Foundation. Will the Giants be wearing tie-dye uniforms?

Life's railway to heaven -- San Jose singer/songwriter/performer Chuck McCabe passed away on Friday the 23rd from pancreatic cancer. He was 65.

Lyle on Leno -- Tune in to see Lyle Lovett appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on the 26th or see him and his band playing live at The Grove in Anaheim on the 27th.

Earl Brothers in SF -- Monday night is always bluegrass at Amnesia in SF starting at 8:30 p.m. However, the club’s calendar incorrectly has The Barefoot Nellies listed as playing tonight, and this is not the case. It will be The Earl Brothers instead. The Nellies now play there every other even month of the year instead of every fourth Monday.

Jammin’ in Alameda -- The place to be for bluegrass pickin’ on Monday nights is McGrath’s Pub in Alameda. Starting at 8:30 p.m. you’ll find familiar faces all around you on bass, mandolins, guitars, banjos and fiddles.

Ramblers in Moss Landing -- Tonight is bluegrass night at Phil’s Fish Market with The Courthouse Ramblers playing from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Burrito grass -- The Monday night Baja Taqueria Invitational Bluegrass Jam in Oakland at 8 p.m. will feature Josh Jakus, Neil Linden, Ran Bush, Gerry Tenney, and Emily Bonn. Have a burrito and enjoy the bluegrass.

Jammin’ in Signal Hill -- Every Monday night, from 6-9 p.m., there is a bluegrass jam at Curley’s Café in Signal Hill. The address is 1999 E Willow Street at Cherry Avenue. Everyone is welcome. For more info contact Jim Wieser at

Happy b-day, Scott Gates! -- Young mandolinist Scott Gates will be celebrating his 18th birthday on the 27th with a concert at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena. This will be a great show, and expect many special guests.

Abbot Creek at Phil's -- On the 27th at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6:30-8:30 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass with two members of Bean Creek and two members of The Abbot Family, Luke and Kyle. No cover.

South Bay bluegrass barbecue -- Windy Hill will be pickin’ bluegrass to go along with the spicy offerings at Sam’s Bar-B-Que in San Jose on the 27th from 6-9 p.m.

Jammin’ in Ventura -- The Ventura Bluegrass Jam at Zoey’s Café now takes place on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 6-9:30 p.m.

Turn your radio on -- Tune into the Bluegrass Country show every Tuesday from 10 a.m.-noon on KMUD up in Garberville to hear Ken Jorgenson playing two hours of bluegrass and country music. Ken also is the owner of Blue Heron soft-shell instrument cases.
