Hit the road, Jack -- If you go to the Carter Ranch Music Festival in Bootjack on the 4th and 5th you can see The Trespassers, I See Hawks in L.A., The Green Machine, Cave Country, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, The String Slingers and many more bands.

Take the Stage Alumni Showcase -- The Take the Stage Alumni Showcase will take place on the 4th at 8 p.m. at the Starry Plough in Berkeley. See the bands Iron Horse, Oyster Stew, Harlan James Bluegrass Band and 'bout Time! All proceeds support TTS scholarships.

Square dance in Oakland -- The second installment of the every-first-Friday monthly square dance will take place at the Niebyl-Proctor Library (6501 Telegraph Avenue) on the 4th at 8 p.m. with the Squirrelly Stringband and caller Jordan Ruyle. $5 or whatever you can pay. No prior experience necessary, and all dances will be taught.

McGrath’s in Alameda -- Folks in the East Bay don’t have to travel very far to experience some fine music this weekend. At McGrath’s Pub in Alameda at 8 p.m. on the 4th hear the best in Americana with Houston Jones, and then it will be county and blues with Azure Moon on the 5th.

New bluegrass invitational jam -- There is a new invitational jam on the first Friday of every month at Bacheeso's Mediterranean Restaurant, 2501 San Pablo Avenue, at the corner of Dwight Way, in Berkeley from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The band on the 4th will be Jeff Ward on mandolin, Deirdre Donovan on bass, Neil Linden on banjo, Jerry Barush on guitar, and Ted Garber on dobro. Bacheeso's is a major supporter of all kinds of acoustic music, and it is great that they have now added bluegrass to their mix.

Murphy’s in Sonoma -- At Murphy’s Irish Pub in the town of Sonoma it will be bluegrass and country on the 4th by the Sonoma Mountain Band from 8-10 p.m., and then on the 6th join the Celtic jam starting at 6 p.m. No cover, and good food and beer in a family friendly atmosphere.

Old Man Markley -- The LA based Old Man Markley, with Joe Weed’s daughter Katie Kendall-Weed on fiddle, will be playing at Sofia’s Thai Kitchen in Davis on the 4th and at the Plough and Stars in San Francisco on the 5th. The band is electric, with drums, doing bluegrass/punk music of their own creation. OMM has great energy and is lot of fun. Proud papa Joe will in attendance at the SF show.

Greenbelt bluegrass -- The fifth annual Bluegrass for the Greenbelt Benefit Concert will be taking place at Dunsmuir-Hellman House in Oakland on the 5th from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. featuring Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen, Crooked Still, Nell Robinson & Red Level, Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands, The Wronglers, The Tuttle Family with AJ Lee, and more.

Turn your radio on -- Tune into Peter Thompson’s Bluegrass Signal radio show on KALW (91.7 FM) in SF on the 5th from 6:30-8 p.m. The show this weekend is titled Live on Arrival. Performing live in the studio will be renowned picker and teacher Orrin Star, who's in the area for a series of house concerts and workshops, and talented teens and pre-teens OMGG, who will get you ready for their show on Vern's Stage as part of the CBA's 35th Annual Father’s Day Festival in Grass Valley in two weeks. You can listen online on the KALW web site, and the first hour of the show is also broadcast five times each week on BluegrassCountry.org.

Rita Hosking in Berkeley -- On the 5th at 7:30 p.m. in Berkeley Rita Hosking & Cousin Jack will play a house concert at the home of Audrey and Milt. They'll be performing as a trio – Rita, Sean, and Bill – and playing some newer stuff, too. Email audrey12@comcast.net to make a reservation.

Redwing in Benicia -- The East Bay bluegrass band Redwing will be picking at the First Street Cafe in Benicia on the 5th from 8- 11 p.m. It's a fun venue with good eats and a bar.

Schoenberg Guitars -- Besides being a wonderful acoustic guitar shop on Ark Row in Tiburon, Schoenberg Guitars also has concerts and workshops in the store from time to time. See Eric Thompson and Alan Senauke on the 5th starting at 8 p.m. Reservations are highly recommended, as space is limited. Call (415) 789-0846 for more info.

Orrin Star on tour -- Renowned guitar picker and teacher Orrin Star returns to northern California this weekend for a workshop and concert tour. Once described as “Arlo Guthrie-meets-Doc Watson,” he was the 1976 National Flatpicking Champion, has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, and is also known for his guitar and mandolin workshops. Hear him live on Bluegrass Signal on the 5th, See him do a workshop in Corte Madera on the 6th from noon-2:30 p.m. (info at gassman55@yahoo.com or 415-713-1791), a house concert in Aromas on the 10th (info csimpson@garlicfestival.com or 408-623-2399), a house concert in Mt. Jammin’ in Sebastopol -- The place for bluegrass pickin' on Saturdays is the Coffee Catz, 6761 Sebastopol Ave, from 2-5 p.m.

Scott Gates in Culver City -- A twin bill of Scott Gates & Nathan McEuen and Robby Longley will be sharing the night on the 5th from 8-10:30 p.m. at Boulevard Music in Culver City.

Dusty Shoes in Grover Beach -- Every Saturday from 5-7 p.m. the Dusty Shoes Gospel Band plays bluegrass at the Station Grill, 170 W. Grand Avenue, in Grover Beach. This is a free event.

Jammin’ in Paso Robles -- "Matt's Jam" takes place every Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Matt's Music, 617 12th Street, in downtown Paso Robles. For more information call (805) 237-0054.

The Bluegrass Mix -- The site called The Bluegrass Mix streams bluegrass online 24/7. Sky Powers has a show called Pacifically Bluegrass, and it airs every Saturday evening from 4-8 p.m. out here in CA. He plays a fine mix of bluegrass, both old and new, with an emphasis on new releases and he also devotes a portion of his show to playing and promoting the bluegrass bands of the Pacific West and Rockies.
