Sharper image -- Like you, I was way tired of the photos of myself that have been appearing at the top of this column. So I had CBA ace photographer Mike Melnyk take some solo shots while he was taking some new band pictures a couple of months back. So for the next few weeks you will be seeing some updated and better-looking photos. If you are in need of some shots of yourself or your band, Mike is the man to call.

CBA spring campout -- Even though the weather in NorCal as of this writing feels a bit winter-like, the seasons have changed and it is time for the CBA Spring Campout. The weather-guessers swear that it is going to be sunny this week in Turlock starting on Tuesday, so load up the van/motorhome/Prius with your gear and get ready to have some fun these next few days with your CBA friends on the 13th-18th. Get your taxes done and get ready to do some pickin’!

Earl Brothers news -- The SF bluegrass band The Earl Brothers have been getting some good press lately. They are featured on CD Baby’s Country Discover Music Newsletter, and they had a great review that you can read here that was posted on the Banjo Hangout site. Congrats to the Earls.

Arlo on tour -- Renowned folk singer Arlo Guthrie will be all over the state this week, and you can see him in Escondido on the 14th, in Los Angeles on the 16th, in Irvine on the 17th, in Arroyo Grande on the 20th, in Davis on the 21st and 22nd, in Berkeley on the 23rd, and in Modesto on the 24th.

Bluegrass in SF -- The Amnesia bar in SF has bluegrass every Monday, and tonight you can see Toshio Hirano play starting at 8:30 p.m. No cover.

Jammin’ in Signal Hill -- Every Monday night, from 6-9 p.m., there is a bluegrass jam at Curley’s Café in Signal Hill. The address is 1999 E Willow Street at Cherry Avenue. Everyone is welcome. For more info contact Jim Wieser at jimmy351@aol.com.

Ramblers in Moss Landing -- Tonight is bluegrass night at Phil’s Fish Market with The Courthouse Ramblers playing from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Jammin’ in Corona -- There is a bluegrass jam on the second and fourth Monday of every month from 7-10 p.m. at the Crossroads Christian Church, 2331 Kellogg Avenue, in Corona. For more info contact Todd Holtkamp at onetoad@adelphia.net or (951) 347-2597.

Jammin’ in Ventura -- Zoey’s Café in Ventura features bluegrass jammin’ on the second and fourth Monday of every month from 6-9:30 p.m.

Burrito grass -- The Monday night Baja Taqueria Invitational Bluegrass Jam in Oakland at 8 p.m. will feature Joe Osborne, Dave Courchaine, Red Rick, Jerry Barush and Rich Ferguson. Have a burrito and enjoy the bluegrass.

Jammin’ in Alameda -- The place to be for bluegrass jammin’ on Monday nights is McGrath’s Pub in Alameda. Starting at 8:30 you’ll find familiar faces all around you on bass, mandolins, guitars, banjos and fiddles.

Jammin’ in La Mesa -- The San Diego Bluegrass Society presents a jam on the second Tuesday of every month at Fuddruckers in La Mesa from 7-9 p.m.

Scott Gates in Altadena -- Young mandolin phenom Scott Gates will be playing a show on the 13th with Chelsea Williams at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena starting at 8 p.m.

Deep Elem at Phil's -- On the 13th at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6:30-8:30 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass with Deep Elem. No cover.

Fiddle tunes jam in SF -- The second Tuesday fiddle tunes jam will take place on the 13th at the SoCha Café in SF on Mission Street near Valencia. The picking begins around 8 p.m. Fiddles, banjos, guitars, mandolins, wash tubs, bass, jugs, saws, autoharps etc., are all welcome but they especially need more guitars and fiddles.

South Bay bluegrass barbeque -- John Murphy’s Carolina Special will be pickin’ some hot bluegrass to go along with the spicy barbeque at Sam’s in San Jose on the 13th from 6-9 p.m. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151.

Turn your radio on -- Tune into the Bluegrass Country show every Tuesday from 10 a.m.-noon on KMUD up in Garberville to hear Ken Jorgenson playing two hours of bluegrass and country music. Ken also is the owner of Blue Heron soft-shell instrument cases.
