Marching into April -- Thursday is April 1st, which is also known at April Fools’ Day. Fools that we sometimes are here at Almost Daily News headquarters, there are no jokes or hoaxes in this column today. Just pure, unadulterated bluegrass news. Get out and enjoy some great music without making a fool of yourself!

Festive photos -- CBA ace photographer (and future Bluegrass Pulitzer Prize winner)(if there were such a category) Mike Melnyk was at the CBA’s Sonoma County Bluegrass & Folk Festival three weekends back and you can now see some of his photos here. Shot number 12, while not exactly an early April Fools’ Joke, has the band (and your ADN editor) looking a bit on the angry side. This is Wild Blue's “punk bluegrass band” look for trying to get gigs playing in dark dingy dives in SF for “Generation Whatever”…

49 Special in Fairfax -- Some hot bluegrass will be served on the 31st by 49 Special at the Iron Springs Brewery in Fairfax starting at 8 p.m. No cover, and kids are welcome. Great food and beer.

South Bay bluegrass barbecue -- Matt & George and Their Pleasant Valley Boys will be pickin’ some bluegrass to go along with the spicy barbeque at Sam’s Bar-B-Que in San Jose on the 31st from 6-9 p.m. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151.

Ray Bierl in Berkeley -- East Bay singer/performer Ray Bierl will be playing solo on the 31st from 7-9 p.m. at Le Bateau Ivre Restaurant in Berkeley. Go by for a nice meal and friendly music in a charming setting. No cover charge.

Brombies in Burbank -- The Brombies play on the first, third, and occasionally the fifth Wednesday nights at Viva Cantina in Burbank starting at 8 p.m.

Deep Elem at Phil's -- On the 31st at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6:30-8:30 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass with Deep Elem. They also play there every Tuesday. No cover.

Jammin’ in San Jose -- The CBA sponsors a jam on the first, third and fifth Wednesdays at Armadillo Willy's on Camden Avenue, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Bring your instrument and your appetite.

Jammin’ in Palo Alto -- There is a bluegrass jam every Wednesday night at Fandango Pizza in Palo Alto starting at 7 p.m.

Black Crown down south -- SF’s Black Crown Stringband is down in southern CA these next few days, and they can be seen playing old-time music on the 1st at the Hyperion Tavern in Los Angeles, on the 2nd at Cafe 322 in Sierra Madre, and on the 3rd at the Red Barn Community Music Series in Los Osos.

Jammin’ in Napa -- There is a CBA sponsored bluegrass jam session at the Pizza Hut in the town of Napa every Thursday night from 7-10 p.m. For more info call Pat Calhoun at (707) 318-1913 or email patcal@napanet.net.

Scott Gates in Santa Clarita -- On the 1st see Scott Gates and Nathan McEuen playing at 7 p.m. at All Corked Up in Santa Clarita.

Jammin’ in Redwood City -- There is a weekly bluegrass and old-time jam on Thursday at a coffee shop called Café Sportivo, 965 Brewster Avenue in Redwood City from 7-10 p.m. For more info contact Mark at rwcbluegrass@gmail.

Martian sightings in Santa Barbara -- See the Salt Martians play bluegrass every Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. for happy hour at the Tupelo Junction Cafe, 1218 State Street, in Santa Barbara. Call (805) 899-3100 for dinner reservations. Full bar and no cover.

Jammin’ in Berkeley -- Thursday night is beginners jam night at the 5th String Music Store, 3051 Adeline Street, in Berkeley, from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Dark Hollow in San Francisco -- The Atlas Cafe presents the best in live bluegrass, old-time and Americana music every Thursday night from 8-10 p.m., and on the 1st enjoy the bluegrass of Dark Hollow.

Jammin’ in Sacto -- Every Thursday folks gather to jam from 7-10 p.m. at the Fifth String Music Store, located at Alhambra & J Streets in Sacramento. You are invited to attend.

Jammin' in Marin -- The Marin Bluegrass Jam takes place on the first and third Thursdays of every month. On the 1st you can join in at the Marin Lutheran Church at 649 Meadowsweet in Corte Madera, just off the Corte Madera exit of Highway 101. The time is 7:30-10 p.m.

Pickin’ in Petaluma -- Ed Neff and Friends play bluegrass every Thursday at the Willowbrook Ale House in Petaluma from 6:30-9:30 p.m. There is no cover, and you get to hear some of the finest traditional bluegrass in the North Bay. The regular pickers are Ed Neff on mandolin, Mike Wilhoyte on guitar, Jeff King on bass, Paul Shelasky on fiddle, and banjoist Larry Cohea. The address is 3600 Petaluma Boulevard North. Jammin’ in Morgan Hill -- In Morgan Hill the CBA sponsored jam takes place most Thursdays from 6-10 p.m. at the Morgan Hill Grange, located at 40 E. 4th Street, except on the third Thursday of each month, when it happens at The Music Tree, located at 17470 Monterey Street.
