Cheaper that Xanax, but possibly more addictive -- How do you deal with anxiety? Most Americans, unfortunately, go running for the medicine cabinet when they get anxious. How does “wild and crazy guy” Steve Martin deal with nervousness? Why – according to a story in the SF Chronicle the other day – by playing the banjo! He says that picking the banjo helped prepare him for his recent Oscar-hosting gig. Now who would have ever thought of this? An instrument that drives a lot of people crazy now actually helps some calm down? Is this a crazy world we live in or what?

Blue Grass Boy signs with Compass Records -- Former Blue Grass Boy Peter Rowan recently inked a deal with Alison Brown’s label Compass Records, and in April Peter and his all-California bluegrass band of Jody Stecher, Keith Little and Paul Knight will be in the studio recording. The new album will feature traditional and original compositions along with some very special guests. The band also was selected to play a showcase at the IBMA World of Bluegrass this September.

49 Special in SF -- Monday is bluegrass night at Amnesia in SF, and you can see 49 Special starting at 8:30 p.m.

Jammin’ in Alameda -- The place to be for bluegrass pickin’ on Monday nights is McGrath’s Pub in Alameda. Starting at 8:30 p.m. you’ll find familiar faces all around you on bass, mandolins, guitars, banjos and fiddles.

Bean Creek in Moss Landing -- Bluegrass will be served this night at Phil’s Fish Market by Bean Creek playing from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Burrito grass -- The Monday night Baja Taqueria Invitational Bluegrass Jam in Oakland at 8 p.m. will feature Dave Hanks, Jerry Tenney, Tom Lucas, Neil Linder and Kyle Patrick O’Brien. Have a burrito and enjoy the bluegrass.

Jammin’ in Signal Hill -- Every Monday night, from 6-9 p.m., there is a bluegrass jam at Curley’s Café in Signal Hill. The address is 1999 E Willow Street at Cherry Avenue. Everyone is welcome. For more info contact Jim Wieser at jimmy351@aol.com.

Cliff Wagner in San Pedro -- Head on over to see Cliff Wagner & Old No.7 playing on the 30th at the Crimson Lounge in San Pedro starting at 9:30 p.m. No cover.

Deep Elem at Phil's -- On the 30th at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6-8 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass with Deep Elem. They play there every Tuesday. No cover.

South Bay bluegrass barbecue -- Leftover Crow will be pickin’ some bluegrass to go along with the spicy barbeque at Sam’s Bar-B-Que in San Jose on the 30th from 6-9 p.m. Ken, Larry and Mark will join with Jim and Louise Mintun. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151.
