Grist for the mill -- The first rule of songwriting is “Write what you know.” Louis Rogers, a country singer from Lakeside, Montana, now has something to write and sing about. While driving from Montana to Idaho recently his car got stuck in the snow for four days and he was stuck there until some folks that were out for a ride in their four-wheel drive vehicle happened across him. Susie Glaze coming back north -- New fans of the Susie Glaze & Hilonesome Band from the SF Bluegrass & Old Time Festival last month (at McGrath's and the Mayflower), mark your calendars now for their Freight and Salvage debut on July 15th. They'll be part of a three-band evening including The Tuttles with AJ Lee and Dr. Elmo & Wild Blue. Check Susie’s entire Northern California summer tour on her site.

Life’s railway to heaven -- Longtime CBA member Philip Anacleto passed away on the 19th. You can read tributes to him on the CBA Message Board. There will be a service for him on the 24th at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 19 Follett Street, in Lemoore.

Stringdusters in LA-- The Infamous Stringdusters can be seen playing at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles on the 22nd as part of the event known as the LA Bluegrass Situation.

Mad Cows in SF -- Tonight is bluegrass night at Amnesia in SF, and you can see The Mad Cow String Band beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Jammin’ in Alameda -- The place to be for bluegrass pickin’ on Monday nights is McGrath’s Pub in Alameda. Starting at 8:30 p.m. you’ll find familiar faces all around you on bass, mandolins, guitars, banjos and fiddles.

Ramblers in Moss Landing -- Tonight is bluegrass night at Phil’s Fish Market with The Courthouse Ramblers playing from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Jammin’ in Ventura -- Zoey’s Café in Ventura features bluegrass jammin’ on the second and fourth Monday of every month from 6-9:30 p.m.

Burrito grass -- The Monday night Baja Taqueria Invitational Bluegrass Jam in Oakland at 8 p.m. will feature Gene Tortora, Dave Courchaine, Joe Ridout, Tom Lucas and Scott Thompson. Have a burrito and enjoy the bluegrass.

Jammin’ in Signal Hill -- Every Monday night, from 6-9 p.m., there is a bluegrass jam at Curley’s Café in Signal Hill. The address is 1999 E Willow Street at Cherry Avenue. Everyone is welcome. For more info contact Jim Wieser at

Turn your radio on -- Tune into the Bluegrass Country show every Tuesday from 10 a.m.-noon on KMUD up in Garberville to hear Ken Jorgenson playing two hours of bluegrass and country music. Ken also is the owner of Blue Heron soft-shell instrument cases.

Deep Elem at Phil's -- On the 23rd at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6:30-8:30 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass with Deep Elem. They play there every Tuesday. No cover.

South Bay bluegrass barbecue -- Lone Prairie will be crooning some cowboy music to go along with the spicy barbeque at Sam’s Bar-B-Que in San Jose on the 23rd from 6-9 p.m. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151.
