Happy Lá Fhéile Pádraig! -- Today is the day for the wearing of the green, and it is also a great day for taking in some live grass, whether it be green or blue. Stay away from the green beer though…

Lucky Tim O -- Speaking of being Irish, Tim O’Brien will be joining Mark Knopfler’s band for the Get Lucky tour starting on April 8th and continuing through May 7th. They will play in Oakland on April 13th, in Santa Rosa on the 14th, in Temecula on the 15th, and in LA on the 16th and 17th. Knopfler is the former lead guitarist and singer in the band Dire Straits.

Here’s to the fiddle that plays the tune! -- On the 17th for the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration at Murphy’s Irish Pub in the town of Sonoma the fun starts with Deirdre & Arias at 3 p.m. with an hour of Celtic music on harp, guitar and fiddle. Dockside will then play Celtic music followed by step dancing at 4:30, and at 7 The Carrtunes offer up far-ranging styles, from bluegrass and R&B to folk and Appalachian.

Nine 8ths Irish on the big day -- The Celtic band Nine-8ths Irish, featuring Kathy Barwick on guitar, will be playing three times on the 17th in Sacramento. At 1:30 p.m. they will be appearing at the St. Patrick’s Day Block Party on L Street between 15th and 16th, sponsored by deVere's Pub. From 4:30-6:30 p.m. they will be at McCormick & Schmick's on J Street between 11th and 12th. Then they will play at Brew It Up at 801 14th Street from 8:30-10:30 p.m.

Celtic brothers in Berkeley -- The Black Brothers will be singing some Irish tunes on the 17th at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley starting at 8 p.m. Marla Fibish will be opening the show.

Altan on tour -- The fabulous Celtic band Altan has a series of shows these next five nights. On the 17th it will be the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto, the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande on the 18th, the Zellerbach Auditorium at UC Berkeley on the 19th, the Laxson Auditorium at Cal State in Chico on the 20th, and the Sebastopol Community Centre on the 21st.

South Bay bluegrass barbeque -- Will they be barbecuing corned beer? Enjoy Sidesaddle & Company and the spicy barbeque on the 17th at Sam’s Bar-B-Que in San Jose from 6-9 p.m. Some of LeAnn’s fiddle students will be on hand to render some Celtic tunes. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151.

The Stringdusters are in state-- You will have many chances to see The Infamous Stringdusters this next week. See them at the Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne on the 17th, at the Crystal Bay Club Casino, Crystal Bay, NV, on the 18th, at The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley on the 19th, at Don Quixote's in Felton on the 20th, at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley on the 21st, and at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles on the 22nd.

Bill and Meghan down south -- Bill Evans & Megan Lynch are down in SoCal these next few days, and they will be playing at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena on the 17th, at Acoustic Music in San Diego on the 19th, and at Boulevard Music in Culver City on the 20th.

New jam in San Jose -- The CBA sponsors a new jam on the first, third and fifth Wednesdays at Armadillo Willy's on Camden Avenue, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Bring your instrument and your appetite.

Bluegrass in Moss Landing -- Every Wednesday night at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6-8 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass. Tonight see Homefire play.

Slow jam in Chico -- The next slow jam at The Acoustic College, 932 West 8th Avenue, in Chico, will take place on the 17th from 7-9 p.m. This is a collaboration between the Acoustic College and the CBA, and it is on-going every third Wednesday. Sid Lewis provides a cozy and welcoming smaller venue in which to share bluegrass tunes and songs. The jam will be geared towards beginner to intermediate players on guitar, mandolin, banjo, dobro, fiddle, vocals, and bass. Feel free to bring a few songs you would like to work on playing and sharing with a group. Lucy Smith will be leading this jam.

Brombies in Burbank -- The Brombies play on the first, third, and occasionally the fifth Wednesday nights at Viva Cantina in Burbank starting at 8 p.m.

Jammin’ in Palo Alto -- There is a bluegrass jam every Wednesday night at Fandango Pizza in Palo Alto starting at 7 p.m.

Brothers in Berkeley -- Tonight The Whiskey Brothers will be playing their twice monthly gig at the Albatross Pub in Berkeley starting at 9 p.m. They play classic Western swing, bluegrass and original music, featuring great vocal harmonies. The band includes local music-scene veterans Jeff Ward on mandolin, Dave Courchaine, guitar, John MacFarlane on fiddle, Bruce Campbell on bass, and Craig Fletcher on banjo. No cover.

Fiddles in Sonora -- Fiddles, Etc. will be playing bluegrass, country and old-time fiddle music from 6-8:30 p.m. at Mike's Pizza in East Sonora on the 18th. For more information call (209) 586-2042.

Jammin’ in Murphys -- There is a new bluegrass and acoustic jam in the town of Murphys at the Growler Craft Brewery on the first and third Thursday of each month from 6-9 p.m. The address is 164 Highway 4. Go on by and start pickin’!

Pickin’ in Petaluma -- Ed Neff and Friends play bluegrass every Thursday at the Willowbrook Ale House in Petaluma from 6:30-9:30 p.m. There is no cover, and you get to hear some of the finest traditional bluegrass in the North Bay. The regular pickers are Ed Neff on mandolin, Mike Wilhoyte on guitar, Jeff King on bass, Paul Shelasky on fiddle, and banjoist Larry Cohea. The address is 3600 Petaluma Boulevard North.
