Lucy, we love you--Lucy Smith was appointed on Saturday to replace John Senior as CBA Area Vice President for Butte/Tehema. (Happily, John’s new sound business is burgeoning and has left him with very little free time.) On Saturday, January 26, 2 PM - 5:30 PM Lucy will host here first jam at Augie's (230 Salem St., Chico): (4th Saturday of the month) People who play mandolin, banjo, guitar, fiddle, dobro, bass, and bluegrass harmonica are encouraged to come and jam with us. People who like to sing bluegrass songs, or listen to bluegrass, or simply want to know what the heck bluegrass IS are encouraged to come. ~~~While the jam will be from 2 to 5:30, the first hour is a SLOW JAM (for those who like to hear and/or play ALL the notes). Songs will be played at a slow to moderate tempo, and jam etiquette will be discussed. ~~~~~The regular jam starts at 3 PM. We encourage folks to bring songs and tunes of the "founding fathers" of bluegrass-- Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Stanley Brothers, Osborne Brothers, Jim & Jesse--as well as "second generation" bands.

Watch for San Jose Jam--It’s been a long dry spell for good bluegrass jamming opportunities in Silicon Valley’s capitol city. Well, here’s the good news-Banjo Bob Farrell, and Fiddle'n Steve Paxton have stepped up and volunteered to be the jam hosts. They’ve got a couple possible locations and are looking at the first and third Thursdays of each month. Stay tuned and watch for more information here.
Joe’s On The Mend--As many of you know, Joe Quealy underwent extensive surgery on his lower back four weeks ago at Univ. of Calif. Med. Center in San Francisco. We were delighted to learn that the operation was an unqualified success. Joe’s still mending in the Bay Area. He expects to be sufficiently healed to return to Santa Maria in early January. We all hope Joe’s recuperation will be full and swift. Many thanks to everyone who offered Joe prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
The SteelDrivers: The blues in bluegrass-- Nice review ran on The SteelDrivers today, one in USA Today.
Nashville veterans bring their experiences in country, blues, rock and
Americana to bear in this bluegrass project. The SteelDrivers earn their
name not only with Chris Stapleton's hard, hoarse shout but with the
relentless attack of Tammy Rogers' fiddle and Mike Henderson's mandolin
as well. With Stapleton and Henderson providing most of the songs, some
of which have been recorded previously by the likes of Gary Allan and
Kevin Welch, the group has galvanized into a force in bluegrass and
beyond. – Mansfield (Click above for full article.)
