Bluegrass videos -- There is a wonderful new site here put together by Carl Carlson, a member of the South East Bluegrass Association in Atlanta, GA, that features free videos of many of your favorite current bluegrass bands as well as classics of the Stanley Brothers, Lester Flatt, Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe and many more. The website currently has over 250 videos in the library. The site also features a free email subscription service where if you sign up you can receive newly added videos by email.

Hot Scott -- Set your TiVo or VCR for Monday the 25th (Memorial Day) as young SoCal mandolin picker Scott Gates has been selected to play mandolin in an upcoming episode of The Ellen Degeneres Show. He will be backing up the one and only comedian/actor/writer/banjo player Steve Martin, who will be promoting his new album The Crow. In the SF Bay Area the show is aired at 4 p.m. on KNTV.

Pickin’ photos -- The Golden Gate Park Pickin’ Picnic on May 9th was hosted by Jeanie and Chuck Poling and sponsored by the CBA. And it was a lot of fun. Ace photographer Mike Melnyk was there for a bit, and here are his photos from the festivities.

Swing your partner -- There was a real nice story in the SF Chronicle the other day about square dancing the Bay Area. It is not just for squares anymore…

Time Jumpers in the NY Times -- Okay, they are not bluegrass, but they are the hottest band in Nashville, and they are called The Time Jumpers. They are a Western swing band that plays every Monday night at the venerable Station Inn, and they will also be playing at the Strawberry Music Festival in September. You can read a great piece about them in the Sunday NY Times. Thanks to Randy Pitts for this tip.

Strawberry fields -- Speaking of the Strawberry Festival up by Yosemite, one will take place over this coming Memorial Day Weekend. Normally the fest is sold-out by now, but there are still tickets available on their site and there are some bargains to be had by individuals on the Ticket Exchange. If you have the weekend open, some of the acts you can see there are Dry Branch Fire Squad, Sawmill Road, Poor Man's Whiskey, The Wronglers, Natalie MacMaster, The Greencards, Marty Stuart, Mike Farris & The Roseland Rhythm Revue, and The Duhks.

Jammin’ in Signal Hill -- Every Monday night, from 6-9 p.m., there is a bluegrass jam at Curley’s Café in Signal Hill. The address is 1999 E Willow Street at Cherry Avenue. Everyone is welcome. For more info contact Jim Wieser at

Bean Creek in Moss Landing -- Tonight is Monday so this means that at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing you can experience live bluegrass. See Bean Creek tonight from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Burrito grass -- The Monday night Baja Taqueria Invitational Bluegrass Jam in Oakland at 8 p.m. will feature Tom Lucas, Stacy Samuels, Red Rick, Ran Bush and Bruce Campbell. Have a burrito and enjoy the bluegrass.

Greencards on tour -- The Greencards are all over Northern California this week. On the 18th see them at Don Quixote’s in Felton, on the 20th at the Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne, on the 22nd at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco with , on the 23rd at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, and on the 24th at Strawberry.

Jammin’ in Alameda -- The place to be for bluegrass jammin’ on Monday nights is McGrath’s Pub in Alameda. Starting at 8:30 p.m. you’ll find familiar faces all around you on bass, mandolins, guitars, banjos and fiddles.

Bluegrass in the mountains -- At the Braemar Country Club in Tarzana on the 19th you can see Murphy’s Flaw play. These shows are produced with the Bluegrass Association of Southern California. Most concerts at the club are free and you can purchase dinner (a pasta buffet, complete with soup, dinner salad with added chicken breast) for $14, served all evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. Such a deal! Bar service available. Ample seating and free parking.

Deep Elem at Phil's -- On the 19th at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6:30-8:30 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass with Deep Elem. They play there every Tuesday. No cover.

Bluegrass night in Chula Vista -- The San Diego Bluegrass Society is having its third Tuesday bluegrass night at Fuddruckers in Chula Vista on the 19th. From 6:30- 7 p.m. there is an open mic, followed by bluegrass karaoke hour from 7-8, and then more open mic from 8-9. During the karaoke segment you get to sing and/or play a bluegrass song with the host band, The Full Deck. Go to the web site to find out how to sign up.

South Bay bluegrass barbeque -- Cabin Fever will be pickin’ some hot bluegrass to go along with the spicy barbeque at Sam’s in San Jose on the 19th from 6-9 p.m. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151.
