Time to pick -- On Friday the 27th enjoy an evening of bluegrass with 'bout Time! at Bob's Courthouse Cafe on the corner of Broadway and Middlefield in Redwood City. Bob's is a classic American diner serving beer and wine. Music begins at 7 and goes until 9. Bob's features home-cooking, American style. Grab dinner, snack or dessert.

Fiddle contest in Oroville -- The Oroville Old-Time Fiddlers Contest started on the 26th and it runs through the 28th at the Memorial Auditorium.

Kitchen bluegrass -- Kitchen Help will be cooking up some bluegrass tonight at McGrath’s Pub in Alameda starting at 8 p.m.

Bluegrass in Sonoma -- At Murphy’s Irish Pub in the town of Sonoma on the 27th at 8 p.m. enjoy the traditional bluegrass sounds of The David Thom Band. Tasty food is available in a family-friendly atmosphere, and there is no cover.

Fiddlin’ around the bay -- East Coast fiddler Laura Cortese is on tour in Northern California this week. You can see her at the Cayuga Vault in Santa Cruz on the 27th and at a house concert in Grass Valley on the 28th.

Jumpin’ Frog -- On the fourth Friday there is a jam at The Frog and Fiddle in Sonora, so head on over on the 27th at 7 p.m. This jam has no ending time so people are welcome to pick until they drop.

Old-time meets new-time in Larkspur -- See The Waybacks headline and Warren Hellman’s band The Wronglers opening at the Lark Theatre in downtown Larkspur on the 27th starting at 8 p.m.

Laurie & Tom -- Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum will be on a co-bill with Rani Arbo & daisy mahem at the Napa Opera House on the 27th.

Stud puppies on tour -- Whiskey Puppy and the Tennessee Studs have one show left on their CA tour. Puppy, from Portland, OR, plays bluegrass and old-time, and the Studs are Amsterdam's best bluegrass band. See them at the Stage Door in Mt. Shasta on the 27th.

Say whut? -- Whutnutts from miles around will be gathering to see The Whutknotts, Marin’s finest Americana trio, play on Saturday the 28th from 2-4 p.m. at Iron Springs Brewery in Fairfax. No cover. The trio consists of Doug Adamz on guitar, harmonica and fiddle, Don Rich on guitar, and Carltone on doghouse bass. All three sing, and they have been playing together in various bands over the past 19 years.

Turn your radio on -- Tune into Peter Thompson’s Bluegrass Signal radio show on KALW (91.7 FM) in SF on the 28th from 5-8 p.m. for a special three-hour fundraising show. The theme this week is Hard Pressed (But We Can Find A Way).

Jammin’ in Chico -- The bluegrass jam in downtown Chico takes place on the 28th at Augie's Coffee House at 230 Salem Street, between 2nd & 3rd Streets, from 2-5 p.m., with the first hour being a slow jam. Lucy Smith is your host.

Take the Stage graduation -- At the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley on the 28th the bands from the winter edition of the Take the Stage session will have their debuts on the stage. Hilary Perkins is the organizer of this wonderful workshop. Stop by to see the stars of tomorrow.

Cool dudes -- The Grateful Dudes, grateful to have a weekly gig, can be seen playing bluegrass on the 28th at Vincenzo’s Pizza in Newhall from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Band members Bill Bryson, Dennis Fetchet, Scott Micale and Rodger Phillips have been playing at Vincenzo’s for 20 years now.

Jammin’ in Sebastopol -- The place for bluegrass pickin' on Saturdays is the Coffee Catz, 6761 Sebastopol Ave, from 2-5 p.m.

Jammin’ in Fresno County -- For all of you central California pickers, the last-Saturday-of-the-month-bluegrass-jam-and-potluck will take place in Squaw Valley on the 28th from 5-9 p.m. at the Bear Mountain Library, 30733 E. Kings Canyon Road (Hwy. 180), in Squaw Valley. Coffee will be provided. Bring your dinner service and a potluck dish to share, and your beverage of choice (no alcohol). Sunday morning fun -- The Fruit Jar Pickers play every Sunday from 10-noon at the Rough and Ready Opry Palace (near Grass Valley). This is an acoustical event somewhere between a jam, a concert, and sing-along.

Flatt Lonesome in Santa Rosa -- Sheila Groves and Flatt Lonesome will be back at the Russian River Brewery on 4th Street in Santa Rosa on the 29th starting at 7 p.m.

Belle hits the books -- Belle Monroe & Her Brewglass Boys will be playing at 3 p.m. on the 29th at Red Hill Books in the Bernal Heights area of SF, located at Cortland & Bennington Streets. Free music, free refreshments, and even some free books.
