Black Crown in SF -- John McKelvy, formerly guitarist and lead singer in The Earl Brothers bluegrass band, has a new band called the Black Crown Stringband. They won the 2007 Berkeley Old Time Convention string band contest, calling themselves The Pilot Lighters at that time. The band is John on guitar, Tim Hicks on mandolin, Elise Engleberg on fiddle, Matt Knoth on banjo, and Rob Mellberg on bass. See them on the 21st at the Cafe International in SF, and on the 22nd at the Atlas Cafe along with the Flat Iron String Band.

Blue & Lonesome in Berkeley -- The North Bay bluegrass band Blue & Lonesome will be playing a show tonight at the French restaurant Le Bateau Ivre in Berkeley. The music starts at 7 p.m. Go early to get a good seat. This is a really fun gig and the band would love to keep this venue going. Le Bateau Ivre is located at 2629 Telegraph Avenue. Bluegrass in Auburn -- There is good food and hot bluegrass being served on the 21st at Latitudes in Auburn from 7:30-9 p.m. with Mountain Laurel providing the picking. No cover.

Brombies do Burbank -- The Brombies play on the first, third, and occasionally the fifth Wednesday nights at Viva Cantina in Burbank starting at 8 p.m.

Pickin’ in Petaluma -- Ed Neff and Friends play bluegrass every Thursday at the Willowbrook Ale House in Petaluma from 6:30-9:30 p.m. There is no cover, and you get to hear some of the finest traditional bluegrass in the North Bay.
