IBMA Showcase Band deadline -- If you are considering submitting your bluegrass band for a showcase slot at the next International Bluegrass Music Association World of Bluegrass conference in September of 2009 the deadline for doing such is January 15th. Go to the website for more info.

Ramblers in Moss Landing -- Every Monday and Wednesday night at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing you can experience live bluegrass. See The Courthouse Ramblers tonight from 6-8 p.m.

Jammin’ in Corona -- There is a bluegrass jam on the second and fourth Monday of every month from 7-10 p.m. at the Crossroads Christian Church, 2331 Kellogg Avenue, in Corona. For more info contact Todd Holtkamp at or (951) 347-2597.

Bluegrass in SF -- Amnesia is the place to go tonight to see Toshio Hirano play starting at 8:30 p.m. No cover.

Jammin’ in Signal Hill -- Every Monday night, from 6-9 p.m., there is a bluegrass jam at Curley’s Café in Signal Hill. The address is 1999 E Willow Street at Cherry Avenue. Everyone is welcome. For more info contact Jim Wieser at

Bluegrass tacos -- The Monday night Baja Taqueria Invitational Bluegrass Jam in Oakland at 8 p.m. will feature Jill Cruey, Neil Linden, Dave Courchaine, Jerry Tenney and Chris Smith. Have a burrito and enjoy the bluegrass.

Jammin’ in Alameda -- The place to be for bluegrass pickin’ on Monday nights is McGrath’s Pub in Alameda. Starting at 7:30 you’ll find familiar faces all around you on bass, mandolins, guitars, banjos and fiddles.

Deep Elem bluegrass -- On the 13th at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6-8 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass with Deep Elem. They are now there every Tuesday. No cover.

South Bay bluegrass barbeque -- John Murphy’s Carolina Special will be pickin’ some hot bluegrass to go along with the spicy barbeque at Sam’s in San Jose on the 13th from 6-9 p.m. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151.

Jammin’ in La Mesa -- The San Diego Bluegrass Society presents a jam on the second Tuesday of every month at Fuddruckers in La Mesa from 7-9 p.m.

Scott Gates in Long Beach -- Young mandolin wizard Scott Gates on the l3th will be joining Evan Marshall & Friends at the All American Melodrama Theater and Music Hall in Long Beach starting at 7:30 p.m.

Raging Rhonda -- Rhonda Vincent & The Rage are on their way west and you will have ample choices to see them play. On the 14th see them at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, on the 15th at The Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, on the 16th at the Morgan Hill Grange Hall, on the 17th at the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande, and on the 18th at the Blythe Bluegrass Festival.

Life’s railway to heaven -- Nashville mandolin virtuoso Butch Baldassari died on the 10th while in hospice care in Nashville, 20 months after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. He was 56. You can read his obit in the Nashville Tennessean.”
