Change in name -- The Old Stan, the saloon in Sonora that was taken over last fall by Peter Barnato (who also owns McGrath’s Pub in Alameda) is about to change its name to The Frog and The Fiddle.

Old-time is not a crime in SF -- At least, not yet it isn’t! The Mercury Dimes are now hosting an evening of old-time country music one Wednesday each month in San Francisco, and tonight the very first International Old-Time Invitational will feature Jordan Ruyle, Tom Lucas, Matt Knoth and Elise Engelberg on banjo, guitar, fiddle, bass and perhaps banjo uke. Help support old-time music by joining them on fiddle tunes, ragtime ditties and a country song or two. Show time is 7:30-9:30 p.m. and it is free. The location is the Cafe International, 508 Haight Street at Fillmore.

Bluegrass in Moss Landing -- Every Wednesday night at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6:30-8:30 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass. Tonight see Homefire play.

Bleu et Seulet en Berkeley -- Okay, for those of you who didn’t study French in seventh grade, translated this means Blue & Lonesome (monsieur Ed Neff et les amis). And tonight you can see them jouer le herbe de bleu a Le Bateau Ivre in Berkeley starting at 7 p.m. Bon temps!

South Bay bluegrass barbeque -- Enjoy Sidesaddle & Company and the spicy barbeque this evening at Sam’s Bar-B-Que in San Jose from 6-9 p.m. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151.

Brothers in Berkeley -- Tonight The Whiskey Brothers will be playing at the Albatross Pub in Berkeley starting at 9 p.m. They play classic Western swing, bluegrass and original music, featuring great vocal harmonies. The band includes local music-scene veterans Jeff Ward on mandolin, Dave Courchaine, guitar, John MacFarlane on fiddle, Bruce Campbell on bass, and Craig Fletcher on banjo. No cover.

Jammin’ in San Jose -- There is a jam in San Jose on the first and third Wednesday of the month at Round Table Pizza on the corner of Union and Camden. For more info please contact Fiddle’n Steve Pexton at sepexton@gmail.com.

Fiddle summit in Berkeley -- At the Roda Theatre in downtown Berkeley on the 21st at 8 p.m. the Freight & Salvage is presenting some of Celtic music's most notable players, including Natalie Haas, Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill and Bruce Molsky.

John at Java -- John Green, proprietor of The Fifth String Music Store in Sacramento and erstwhile CBA Board Member, along with some friends can be seen performing on the 21st at the Java Lounge in the capital city starting at 7 p.m.

Fiddles and more in Sonora -- Fiddle's Etc (old-time fiddle, country, bluegrass) will be sawing away on the 21st from 6-8:30 p.m. at Mike's Pizza, 14721 Mono Way in Sonora.

Jammin' in Marin -- The Marin Bluegrass Jam, which has been running for over 9 years now, takes place on the first and third Thursdays of every month. So on the 21st you can join in at the Marin Lutheran Church at 649 Meadowsweet in Corte Madera, just off the Corte Madera exit of Highway 101. The time is 7:30-10 p.m. The playing level is beginner to intermediate. It is a big room, so there is also space for those who may want to go and listen.

Capital Justis -- No, this is not a misspelling in honor of Rick Cornish’s recent message board posting. The band is called Poetic Justis because that is the way Michael Justis spells his last name. See them play at the Fox & Goose on the 21st in Sacramento. Michael also has a new CD, just in time for all of those back to school teacher gifts! Besides Michael the band features Steve McLane on guitar, Kathy Barwick on dobro, Warren Jones on congas, and Frank Mouton on the bass. No cover.

Jammin’ in Morgan Hill -- In Morgan Hill the jam at the El Toro Brewing Company takes place every Thursday from 6-10 p.m. For info contact Dick Simunic at (408) 316-4745 or jrsimunic@hotmail.com.

Stringdusters in Culver City -- You can see The Infamous Stringdusters on the 21st when they play the Culver City Summer Music Festival starting at 7 p.m. This is a free event.

Jammin’ in Sacto -- Every Thursday evening, from 7-10 p.m., there is a jam at The Fifth String Music Store, located at Alhambra & J Streets in Sacramento.

Bluegrass in San Francisco -- The Atlas Cafe presents the best in live bluegrass and old-time music every Thursday night from 8-10 p.m. On the 21st you can see The Backyard Party Boys play, and there is never a cover charge.

Jammin’ in Berkeley -- Thursday night is beginners jam night at the 5th String Music Store, 3051 Adeline Street, in Berkeley, from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
