Oh, say, you can see AJ -- The young and very talented AJ Lee from the Central Valley will be singing the National Anthem at the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at the O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis on the 25th. It will be televised on the SPEED channel. The performance will be at 5 p.m. PST, and 8 p.m. EST. If you have DirecTV, it'll be channel on 607, or if you have Dish Satellite, it’ll be channel 150. On cable, please check your listing.

Hot time in Alameda -- In Alameda on the 25th at McGrath’s Pub starting at 8 p.m. check out the Marin County bluegrass ensemble known as Savannah Blu. On Saturday afternoon it will be The Steel Guitar Summit starting around 1 p.m., and then the party really gets started at 8 p.m. with The Backyard Party Boys.

Bluegrass in Sonoma -- At Murphy’s Irish Pub in the town of Sonoma on the 25th at 8 p.m. enjoy the traditional bluegrass sounds of The David Thom Band, and then on the 26th at 8 p.m. it will be more traditional bluegrass with Dr. Elmo & Wild Blue. Tasty food is available in a family-friendly atmosphere, and there is no cover.

Battle Mountain Festival -- The Battle Mountain Music Festival will be taking place in Battle Mountain, NV, from the 25th-27th. Some of the acts you can see there are Sawmill Road, Cedar Hill, Lonesome Traveler Bluegrass Band, Westwind and others.

Kitchen pickin’ -- The Kitchen Help Bluegrass Band will be servin’ up some old fashioned bluegrass on the 25th from 8-10 p.m. at Bob’s Courthouse Café, 2198 Broadway Street, in Redwood City. Jim Mintun will be sittin’ in on dobro.

Carrie Hassler on tour -- Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain will be playing a series of shows up north this week. On the 25th it will be the Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne; on the 26th see them play in Clovis (call 559-977-3598 for more info); and on the 27th it will be at Don Quixote’s in Felton.

Big Bear Bluegrass Festival -- On the 26th there will be a solid day of music at the Big Bear Bluegrass Festival in the San Bernardino Mountains. See Scott Gates & Pacific Ocean Bluegrass, Holcomb Valley Boys, Sligo Rags, The Ramblin’ Rangers, The Mill Creek Boys and lots more.

Turn your radio on -- Tune into Peter Thompson’s Bluegrass Signal radio show on KALW (91.7 FM) in SF on the 26th from 6:30-8 p.m. to hear selections from some new Rounder Records releases, including Danny Paisley & The Southern Grass, Dan Tyminski, James King, The Grascals, Sierra Hull and lots more good stuff.

Contra dance in Sacto -- Join Nine-8ths Irish for a contra dance with members of the Sacramento Country Dance Society on the 26th at 8 p.m. at the Coloma Community Center, 4623 T Street, in Sacramento. Beginners can get basic instruction from 7:30-8 p.m.

Jimmy and Moondi in SF -- Bluegrass veterans Jimmy Gaudreau & Moondi Klein have been traveling the country opening shows for Emmylou Harris. For reasons unknown the show at the Masonic Auditorium in SF was canceled, so instead the duo will be playing a special show at The Music Store in SF’s West Portal district on the 26th starting at 2 p.m. Both of these guys were in the band Chesapeake years ago, and it is worth the price of admission just to hear Moondi sing, as he is one of the finest singers in bluegrass.

Jammin’ in Chico -- The bluegrass jam in downtown Chico takes place on the fourth Saturday at Augie's Coffee House at 230 Salem Street, between 2nd & 3rd Streets, on the 26th from 2-5:30 p.m., with the first hour being a slow jam.

Drifts in Hemalayas -- See the bluegrass band Natural Drift when they play on the 26th at Hemalayas in Cameron Park from 7:30-10 p.m.

Bluegrass in the park in Santa Cruz -- The NCBS & The Santa Cruz Saturday Market present a free summer day of bluegrass in the park on the 26th from noon-5 p.m. on the Duck Pond Stage in San Lorenzo Park, next to the Santa Cruz Courthouse. See Mountain Drive, Regina Bartlett and Common Cents play. The market will be open all day.

Highway One on Highway One -- The bluegrass band Highway One will literally be playing on Highway One in Stinson Beach on the 27th at the Sand Dollar restaurant from noon-3 p.m. No cover, good food, and the ocean just across the street.

Jammin’ in Coulterville -- On the 27th the old-time/Celtic jam will be happening from 2-6 p.m. at the Magnolia Saloon in Coulterville, corner of Highway 49 and Highway 132. For more info

Roundup time at Jupiter -- Jeanie & Chuck’s Country Roundup will be performing on the 27th at the Jupiter Brewpub, 2181 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, from 5-8 p.m. No cover, all ages are welcome, good food and beer. How can you resist?

Jammin’ in Temecula -- On the fourth Sunday of every month there is an open jam session at The Nettworks Ranch, which is in the Temecula/Murrieta Valley, a few miles north of where the 215 and 15 freeways split off, in that triangle. Take Scott Road west two miles off 215, or Bundy Canyon Road east four miles off of 15. Turn south on Daily Road and it is the first ranch on right. Emmylou and friends -- Emmylou Harris and her band will be playing three shows in the state in the next week. See them at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga on the 27th, at the OC Fair in Costa Mesa on the 29th, and at Humphrey’s in San Diego on the 31st.

Jammin’ in Santa Cruz -- The Santa Cruz Fourth Sunday Bluegrass and Old-Time Jam is a friendly jam where everyone who plays bluegrass and old-time can get together to pick. Combining bluegrass and old-time in one jam circle wouldn't work too well so there will be at least three separate circles at the jam -- a slow jam, an advanced bluegrass jam, and an old-time jam. The fun will take place at Oceanview Park on the 27th and begin at 2 p.m. There will be plenty of room to spread out and more jam circles can be added. Oceanview also has a really nice playground and some picnic tables for child entertaining and snacking convenience. It does not have lots of parking, so you may need to unload your stuff, park, and then walk back. For more info email
