Description: |
The Southside Bluegrass Band has been playing their music around the Central Coast for the past seven years. Based in Lompoc, they started when teachers Bill Carlsen (mandolin) and Charlie Bockius (guitar) met banjo player Steve Ball. The three were soon joined by Mark Morehart (bass) and Rodney McAdams (fiddle).
The band has appeared at the Live Oak Music Festival, the Camp Rude Bluegrass Festival, and the Brushes and Blues Art Festival. Along with private party appearances, weddings, and wineries, the band has played at Central Coast music venues Last Stage West and Linnaea's Cafe, as well as performing as part of the Cambria Hoot Concert Series.
Their approach to bluegrass is defined by each individual’s disparate backgrounds as much as by any one basic philosophy. Steve’s banjo takes it’s core sound from studying Earl Scruggs, and that is the traditional center of the band. Bill comes from a background steeped in folk, gospel and traditional music, while Charlie entered bluegrass after years of pop and jazz music. Mark is a fine luthier who builds his own great sounding instruments, and Rodney brings elements from his experiences playing in rock and country bands, but the general love of bluegrass and the respect of its many traditions are what this band is really all about. |
